NEW TECHNOLOGY

We spent some time in the Computer Lab this week getting used to the new CHROMEBOOKS. These new devices use a trackpad instead of a mouse.

Our tech savvy students were off and running in no time!

Our lab also houses 12 PCs.

On this day we practiced games from the ABC-ya website.

Each student has a personal login and password for spellingcity.com, everydaymathonline.com, xtramath.org, and our reading program, www.-k6.thinkcentral.com. We use these and other educational websites in the lab and via our iPads in the classroom.

Wow! This student shows great potential!

Safety training

A.L.I.C.E. Training

Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate

Schools across the country are being trained in safety procedures in the event of a emergency. Our students are accustomed to fire and lockdown drills. As part of our ALICE Training at the elementary level, Mr. Faherty and two Littleton Police Officers visited our class to discuss the importance of listening to teachers in the event of an emergency.

They talked about how school is a safe place to be. The kids responded that they felt safe here. They reviewed the fire drill procedures and why they were in place. They talked about why it was important to stay quiet and together during those times.

The officers did not address any specific scenarios but focused the lesson on following directions and not questioning the teacher in times of emergency.

We have a very imaginative class! :) Their response to each "what if...." question was "Listen to your teacher's directions."

Book Buddies

Once a week we get together with our kindergarten Book Buddies. During this half an hour block, we visit, complete a craft or activity together and read. It's a nice opportunity for second graders to practice their oral reading fluency. The kindergartners benefit from one to one time with an older student who models skills and assists them as needed.

Sometimes students pair up and take turns reading.

The students talk about the story and pictures as they read.

As the year progresses, and the Buddies get to know each other better, the second graders will get an idea about the kind of stories their buddies enjoy. Book selection and reading with expression are two keys to keeping a young one's attention.

What have we been up to?

October is Blindness Awareness Month.

Finley and her vision teacher Mrs. L, put together a wonderful interactive presentation for us. We learned about the Braille Alphabet, had an opportunity to see books in Braille and decoded some words. Finley Brailled all of our names! We each received a card and had to figure out whose name it was.

We learned about special equipment such as Braille Blocks and even Braille Legos.

Thank you Finley and Mrs. L.....GREAT JOB!

In SCIENCE we continue our study of rocks.

Students were interested to learn that each birth month had their own stone.

Fortunately Mrs. Sturtz was wearing Emeralds and peridots that day and could show us actual gemstones.

We learned that MINERALS give rocks their color.

The PET ROCKS came out awesome! The kids really gave them personality. In writing we've been working on fictional adventure stories starring our rocks.

Next week we'll tour the school grounds looking for manmade materials that come from rock.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

Thank you to our PTA and classroom families for donating these wonderful books to our classroom!
