Once a week we get together with our kindergarten Book Buddies. During this half an hour block, we visit, complete a craft or activity together and read. It's a nice opportunity for second graders to practice their oral reading fluency. The kindergartners benefit from one to one time with an older student who models skills and assists them as needed.
Sometimes students pair up and take turns reading.
The students talk about the story and pictures as they read.
As the year progresses, and the Buddies get to know each other better, the second graders will get an idea about the kind of stories their buddies enjoy. Book selection and reading with expression are two keys to keeping a young one's attention.
